Photography Tips - Secrets to Getting the
 Best Pictures of your Baby!

1.  The number one most important consideration in getting "professional-looking" photographs of your baby is the lighting.   If you have ever been to a professional photography studio, the first thing you will notice is that there is no flash on the camera. The light comes from remote sources, either window light or studio flash that is located to one side of the subject.  There is a good reason for this:  the direction that the light is coming from is critical.  Directional lighting provides "modeling" on the subject, using shadows and lighting levels to give dimension to the image.  You will also notice that the light sources are relatively large.  This provides a much softer and more even light than small on-camera flash units.

So, what should you do?  Since you probably don't have access to a lot of studio lighting equipment, you can use window light, and turn off the flash on your camera.  As long as there is no direct sun beating down on your baby, window light will give a soft, directional light that will give you a very professional look.  Place your baby in a bouncer seat or on a boppy pillow, with the "plane of the face" at about a 45 degree angle to the window, and you will be amazed at the results.

2.  How to get those great close-ups of your baby's face, toes, fingers, ears, etc?  There are a couple of ways to get close-ups. You can just move in close to the baby with your camera, or you can zoom your lens all the way out and get in close that way. You will get the best images, and the least amount of distortion, by zooming the lens as far as it will go.  And don't worry if your camera won't focus really close.  Just go in as far as you can to get the photo, and we'll crop as necessary.

3.  When considering what images to take and send for your collection, one of the most important considerations in facial images is the expression.  And since you know your baby better than anyone else, you are the one who knows all of the little "looks" that are just unique to him or her.  And they don't all have to be smiling.  Some of the best images are of those sweet little looks without a smile.  You'll know it when you see it.

4.  What are the best photos to send?  This is strictly up to you.  What you see in the samples on this site are a good place to start:  photos of your baby's face from a lot of different angles, close-ups of hands, feet, belly button, ears, hair, chin, neck and shoulder (those little "rolls" are so cute), and even the little naked butt if you want. (If you take a picture of his or her little butt, be sure you use an angle, such as looking down from the head, so all you see is the butt.  Enough said.)

5.  Here's another tip for getting great shots of your baby's hands and feet.  If your baby wiggles a lot, have mom or dad (or an older sibling or grandparent) hold the baby's hand, with his fingers curled around someone's index finger.  If you can't get the baby to hold her feet still, have mom or dad or a grandparent "cradle" the feet in their hands.  It's a beautiful image.

6.  You also want to concentrate on the eyes.  Make sure your baby is focused on someone or something.  It might be helpful to have another person there to get the baby's attention.  What you don't want is a blank stare.  You want your baby focused in on someone or something.  It really makes all the difference!
